Hi, Michael Beil here taking over as guest editor of the Copywriter Café blog. Steve is putting the final touches on everything for the Ultimate Writing Retreat, which starts tomorrow in Chicago, so he asked me to step in today and give you my thoughts as a new copywriter.
Let me ask you something. What is the connection among content marketing, copywriting, online business, social media, technology, web presence, and coffee?
Well, for starters, your head is probably spinning from the daily deluge of resources tossed your way on all these topics (yes, even coffee–or maybe I’m just on a lot of weird lists).
And they’re all something we need to stay on top of as freelance copywriters, right? (Including coffee. Bad coffee can kill the creative spirit.)
So how do we remain steadfast and not get bogged down by the constant flood of distractions? How do we not get overwhelmed?
Don’t get distracted
Well, duh, Michael! Did Steve really ask you to tell us that!?
Stay with me for 30 more seconds. I don’t know if you’re like me, but I often get things backwards. I focus so hard on not getting distracted, and my mind ends up racing in a dozen different directions anyway.
I propose to you that instead of focusing on what not to do, let’s focus on what to do. That’s all. Let’s keep it simple. Take it one thing at a time.
As someone who’s fairly well-versed in technology and social media, but just learning some of the other stuff, I know where I’m putting my focus in the near future:
I’m discovering that copywriting really is the foundational skill. Once you have that down, you hold the key to the online kingdom. Well, almost. You still have to learn that other stuff.
So I know what I’m focusing on for the foreseeable future. Copywriting. And coffee.
Steve Roller and I hang out twice a week for both. He’s one of those focused guys who has taught me a ton about copywriting in the short time we’ve been working together. He’s also been a wonderful friend.
If you haven’t had the chance to talk with him, please do. And by all means, take a trip to one of the upcoming Ultimate Writing Retreats™ to get focused and watch your copywriting go to the next level.
So, what has helped you focus? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
