Two simple reasons you and I don’t make more money

Steve Roller TWL pictureRemember the Bob Newhart show from the 1970s?

Newhart (that’s him on the chair to my left, near Navy Pier in Chicago) portrayed Dr. Robert Hartley, a Chicago psychologist.

The comedy centered around his office partners and three main patients he tried to help.

For the past two years, I’ve felt a little like Newhart’s character. I’ve been helping aspiring freelance writers with the challenges of getting their writing businesses off the ground. I love what I do.

I guess I’m a pretty good listener, because people tell me everything. Kind of like the shrink’s couch.

Once I filter through all the junk, there are two problems almost everyone has to some extent:

1. We don’t do enough money-making activities.

2. We’re not confident that we’re good enough to make really good money.

I’m including myself here, too.

So how do you fix that? Just crank up the activity and boost your confidence, right?

Easier said than done.

Three easy solutions to bigger writing income

1. Personal training. I’m not talking about fitness personal training, but one-on-one, straightforward, strategic-thinking, business-building training.

Whether you do it with me in the Copywriter Café or someone else, find someone to help you get where you want to go and push you to do more activity.

2. Personal conferences. I’d call these “sessions” but that sounds too much like therapy on Newhart’s couch.

It’s a rare person who doesn’t need an accountability partner. A once a month check-in with someone who’s on the same path or further ahead is good for your health, your finances, your relationships, and your business. A solid friend can suffice here.

3. Connecting with other sharp, like-minded people. That’s the beauty of free groups like the Facebook Copywriter Cafe group (connect with me on Facebook and I’ll add you), or small groups like the Ultimate Writing Retreat™.

It’s amazing how we do things better when we’re well-connected.

Do you agree? What other reasons do you think you don’t have more money? What other solutions have you found to increasing your income?

I’d love to hear from you. Leave me a note below and I’ll be sure to reply.

Steve, understanding we don’t have to go it alone and being willing to seek help and accountability partners constitute major breakthroughs for most solopreneurs. Well said.

I agree completely with everything you said Steve.
Lack of motivation is another reason most of us don’t reach the goals we’ve set for ourselves.
Recently it has been word of mouth that has really started my career and given me the motivation to continue with this path in life that I have chosen.

  • Great Article. I agree with it all!

Especially money making activity and having situations where you bring other people into your business life!

    • Steve Roller says:

Cyndi, yes, other people are key, as you know. Thanks for spurring me on to bigger things!

    • Steve Roller says:

Yes, Cyndi, I think we need to surround ourselves with other top-notch business people, especially as a freelancer. I love the freedom of working for myself, but too much time alone and I lose the sharp edge. Thanks for being on board with the Chicago Ultimate Writing Retreat. Looking forward to it!
